Wedding DIY: Disco Ball Place Names

by

There are a few key places in your wedding that you get to express your personality or the theme of your day. And place name cards are a fabulous place to do it. There are only so many things on your wedding table, so jazzing up your name cards are a great way to add a bit of creativity too!

Of course, in the wedding industry, you can easily spend insane amounts of money on everything, so you will find a lot of luxury versions of place cards out there. And they are gorge to be fair. But this is an easy item to DIY, even if you’re not that crafty. So it could also save you a bit of £££.

Our wedding was an intimate pub wedding in Oxfordshire (a recap is over here) but I wanted to add a bit of disco to the theme. Not like overtly disco-themed, but like a nice little nod. I had a neon sign that said “Follow The Call Of The Disco Ball” and a big disco ball on the dancefloor. So I had the idea of doing little disco ball place names for the tables. I think it added to the vibe, that we were all there for a good time, y’know? It was an informal wedding, with a live band and cocktails, and it just all felt like it went together.

So, I figured you might want to know how I made them. It was pretty affordable and took me a couple of evenings to do. But it was very easy. So this is a quick run-through! Enjoy!

How To Create Disco Ball Place Names

What You Need

  1. A bulk buy of mini disco balls – I got mine from Amazon – here.
  2. Some luggage tags – there are lots of options, but I got these ones.
  3. Mini letter stamps – mine were these Hobbycraft ones but you can get lots of different fonts.
  4. Ink Pad – Also Hobbycraft for me.

Instructions

  1. To make your life easier, put together a list of all guest names at your wedding before you start. You don’t want to be thinking of everyone off of the top of your head and miss someone out, or duplicate someone. (It happens, the wedding planning mindset is a bit mad). Don’t forget to include yourself and your partner! (And include new married names if relevant, it’s cute.)
  2. Start off by laying out your luggage tags on a flat surface, and stamp out individual names on each tag. They may be a bit messy and include the outline of the rectangular stamp, but I think that just adds to the effect! It might be easier to do it by table, to give you an easy stopping point if you’re doing it across a few wedmin evenings.
  3. When all of your names are stamped out, leave them to dry. Avoid trying to stack them up in case the ink goes onto another tag.
  4. The disco balls come with little silver loops and you have a couple of options on how to attach. You can undo the loop, loop through the luggage tag and do it back up. This is definitely neater, but takes more time undoing the knots and doing them up again. I chose the lazier option and looped the knot through the hole and just tied another knot. A bit messier but at this point I was a bit over the wedmin (I recommended not leaving this to the last couple weeks before the wedding!)
  5. And it’s that simple! Try to stack the disco ball place names up somewhere where they won’t get crumpled. I had a wooden crate from IKEA I was using in the decor somewhere else, so stacked the balls with the tags flat on top.

Voila! It’s that easy and I think the disco ball place names look fab! Plus, when the light hits them and they disperse those little flecks of light across the room, it’s very pretty.
