Fancy Stay: The Roebuck Inn, Cheshire

by

When I’m booking a hotel I’m very particular about what I want. I think because I’m used to staying in hostels and AirBnbs, so when it’s a nice hotel and I’m paying a bit more money, I want it to be extra special.

But when Josh booked somewhere for us to stay last week, I didn’t have high hopes.

Not because he doesn’t have great taste and all, but because this was somewhere for us to crash after a wedding. The requirements were: nearby the wedding venue and not extortionate. I figured we’d have a Premier Inn or something. Nothing fancy, just convenient.

So when I arrived at The Roebuck Inn on Friday I was pleasantly surprised by how nice this boutique country hotel actually was! So naturally I thought I’d tell you all about it…

There’s only 6 rooms at The Roebuck Inn and my friends and I had booked 5 of them. Which is probably a good thing as my drunken pals were v loud stumbling back after the wedding! You notice these things when you’re the only sober one.

But being such a small hotel, it’s nice and cosy and intimate and feels like quite the romantic getaway. Think dim lighting, open brickwork and antique furniture. It’s very cute. And quite a casual setting so the staff that work there are friendly and chatty with a really laid-back Reception area.

It’s when they took us to our room that I realised we’d hit the hotel room jackpot. Because I instantly spotted a copper, freestanding, roll-top bath at the end of the bed by a bay window.

This is literally all I look for when finding a fancy hotel. I want a nice bath. No, I want an amazing bath. And a showstopping dream bath in the middle of the room, that’s big enough for two, is absolutely the best thing ever!!

Like I said, we were in Mobberley for a friend’s wedding so didn’t have much time in the room itself. But despite returning to the room around midnight, me and Josh ran a bath and got in! It’s only right. You can’t have a tub like that and not make the most of it!

I had another bath in the morning with the retro radio playing and the sound of the rain outside. Absolutely dreamy.

Ok I’ll stop writing a love letter to this bath. What about the rest of the room?

The rooms are named after different wines and we were in the ‘Malbec’ room. It’s really nicely decorated in a kind of rustic/vintage way with big ornate mirrors, wooden panelling, lots of artwork and antique furniture. I liked it a lot.

Although because the bath is in the middle of the room, there’s not a separate bathroom. You just kinda have his and hers sinks out in the open and a little toilet “shack”. It’s an intimate toilet situation so definitely not for brand new couples going on their first weekender together! Although there are other toilets in the hotel you can use. Just saying.

My only disappointment was that the bed was a standard double, so the same size as our bed at home. Which is fine, but I am 6 months pregnant and was kinda hoping for more space on this stay! But hey, you can’t have it all.

I should also mention that all of the rooms are different, so some of my friends’ rooms had big shower rooms instead of a bath. And my friend Chris got an amazing room (called the ‘Picpoul’ room) with a split level and the dreamy bath up some steps. But they were all really nicely decorated so you can’t really go wrong.

Breakfast was included in the price of our room (£150 a night) and was actually really good. They put out a spread to help yourself from – think homemade granola, muesli, yoghurt, fruit, etc. All very rustic and Pinterest-worthy. And then we could order a cooked breakfast from the menu. I went for some lemony crepes with a berry compote – super sweet and delicious.

My pals’ choices varied from a Full English breakfast or Eggs Benny, to avocado on toast or eggs, chilli and chorizo on toast. The all have pretty high standards and all were happy with the breakfast. So that’s a big tick.

There’s not that much going on in the local area of Mobberley, I can’t imagine ever discovering The Roebuck Inn if it weren’t for the wedding we were attending. There are some nearby churches and stately homes, and a cute village cinema. But I reckon this is the kind of place you come for a romantic getaway. The kind of break where you want a lay-in and a cosy night in at the hotel. Throw in the odd country walk and a visit to a pub for lunch and you’re onto a winner of a weekend.

I also totally recommend a visit if you’re a bit of a bath connisseur like myself. You won’t be disappointed.
