Should My Blog Grow As I Do?

by

It’s a question I’ve been asking myself lately – should the content I produce on this blog grow and move on as I do?

I mean, this is my own personal corner of the internet. The content should reflect my life right? But the thing is, I’m not strictly a lifestyle blogger. This is a travel blog and I’ve worked hard to carve out my niche. I blog about backpacking and budget travel whilst still bringing along the girly necessities and staying true to your personal style. It’s my thing.

But am I going to be a backpacker forever? I’m not so sure.

These days I still stay at the odd hostel but it’s always a private room. The dorm days are over, as Florence would say. But I reckon that’s like 20% of my travels now. More often than not I stay at budget hotels or in Airbnbs, and I feel like that means I’m betraying my USP, y’know?

I’m still budget all the way. I’m not going to turn around and become a luxury blogger. Because quite frankly, I have better things to spend my money on. (Y’know like a wedding lol).

But as I’ve gotten older and entered my thirties, I kinda feel like I’m not the same girl that started this blog.

If you’ve read some of my older posts you’ll know I talk about partying in Vegas at 21, drunken beach parties in Thailand at 23 and doing farmwork in Australia at 24. And most of the time I was staying in £3 a night hostels with cockroaches in order to keep the travels going on longer.

As a 30 year old travel blogger? Well my last few posts have been about getting engaged on the Italian Riviera, road tripping the Deep South USA and exploring the Christmas Markets of Europe. All really fun things that I love writing about. But it’s a long way from my twenty-something travels.

Saying that, I like to think I still prioritise the same things – budget stays, good food, cool bars and quirky things to do. Just in a bit more of a grown-up way.

But the reason I’m writing this post is that as my life progresses I want to write about things that are relevant to me that don’t necesssarily fit in with this niche of mine.

I want to write about honeymoon ideas. I want to write about hen parties abroad. I want to write about treating yo’self to a spa day. I want to write about more UK-based adventures. But will that alienate the twenty-something gal that reads my blog and is planning a backpacking trip around Asia?

Or are the people that read my blog 6 years ago in the same boat that I’m in? Are they also having to deal with real-life, grown-up shit? Should my blog evolve as we all get older together?

I’m not really sure to be honest.

I’m convinced that the answer is always a compromise. Y’know like I should write about my honeymoon ideas and a few little things about my wedding plans, but still make an effort to review hostels when I can and create budget city guides.

Or maybe I should just think – you know what, this is my blog and I’ll write whatever the fuck I want and if people want to read it they can but no worries, mate.

Probably the last one.

But I’m really keen to hear what you think, pal. Are you mainly interested in the backpacking side of my blog? Or are you growing up with me and want to hear some of the thirty-something travel experiences?

Let me know what you think in the comments below, tweet me or find me over on Instagram, babes.

  1. I have been reading your posts for a while and it’s been good to see how your travels have developed. I’m not your average target audience since I’m male, 50+ and I have a chronic medical condition which impacts on my mobility so for me I need more creature comforts when I’m travelling. For my wife and I we do organised coach holidays but also do shorter breaks where we will book Airbnb’s, organise our own itineraries, travel etc.
Personally I think its good for your blog to develop, grow and change as your life changes – it does after all reflect your lifestyle so if your lifestyle changes then your blog can too.
I’m currently developing my own travel/lifestyle blog which reflects my life, the challenges I face medically and how I adapt the way I travel to overcome these and over the years these approaches have changed so I can absolutely see where your thoughts are coming from.
Life is fluid so your blog can be too – Good luck
