When I think Spain, I think wine and tapas. I don’t think gelato. But on a recent trip to Catalonia, I discovered what is easily the best gelato I’ve ever eaten. That’s right, better than the Ferrero Rocher gelato I had in Casablanca, Morroco!
Rocambolesc Gelateria is from the minds of the Roca brothers, who brought us the award-winning El Cellar De Can Roca, one of the best restaurants in the world. So you know their gelato has got to be good.
So where is this magical place? Tucked into the pretty streets of Girona, Rocambolesc Gelateria looks quite unassuming from the outside, but feels like you’ve been transported to Willy Wonka’s factory on the inside! Candy striped pipes and pastel-coloured tubs line the walls so it’s a cute shop to visit even if you didn’t want any gelato. But who wouldn’t want gelato?
Although there are plenty of takeaway tubs in weird and wonderful flavours such as parmesan or asparagus and truffle, there are a few iconic flavours of theirs that you can order from the counter with a variety of exciting toppings!
I decided to go for the ‘Green Gelato’ purely because I was intrigued as to what flavour ‘Green’ was exactly! It turns out it’s a combo of apple, cucumber, basil and mint!
And in terms of toppings, Rocambolesc always provide recommendations for each flavour’s perfect accompaniments. My Girona city guide, Margarita, advised that I go with the recommendation as these guys know what they’re on about! So my Green Gelato was topped with green tea-coated pistachios, mint sugar and candied eucalyptus.
So what did all of these strange flavours taste like combined? Well the name of this post gives that away really… It was bloody brilliant. Seriously refreshing and zingy but still sweet and delicious. Honestly, it’s over a week since I ate it and I’m still thinking about it!
A friend of mine went for the coconut and violet gelato topped with their recommended fresh grated coconut, strawberries, and violet sugar-coated marshmallows. This was also delightful and tasted just like palma violet sweets!
So seriously, if you’re anywhere in Costa Brava, you NEED to check this place out. I think I may have to go back to Girona just to taste the other flavours…

I’ll be going here 100% thank you 🙂
You’re very welcome!
That gelato looks SO delicious! Gelato is one thing I refuse to sacrifice while traveling. My favorite gelato place so far is Amorino, but I haven’t tried this one yet! You can never go wrong with gelato 🙂
I totally agree! Ooh where’s Amorino? I’ll have to give it a go!!
I’ve seen Amorino stores all over Europe! Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Paris, Lyon, etc. I’m sure there is one in just about every big city. You should definitely try it, if you get it on a cone they shape the gelato into a flower. Not that, that’s important but it’s still cool! 🙂
Ahh well I don’t know how I’ve missed it but I’ll definitely keep an eye out now! Flower shaping is always a plus haha. Thanks for the tip!
