Hey! I used Tumblr on my trip, which is pretty easy for a beginner. Although you’ll need wifi to save a draft. I just typed it out in the Notes on my phone and copy and pasted into the Tumblr app when I had internet. Safe travels! X

I’ve been reading your blog and am finding it really helpful, definitely the type of traveler I hope to be! I’d already planned on taking heels with me…
I’m planning my first solo trip from January for 6 months to NZ, OZ and South East Asia. I’ve starting buying things now in the UK as it’s the right season, your tips are great and I’ve also found some good things along the way.
I have a question – did you take a sleeping bag on any of your trips?
Also, how good was your camera? I’ve got an old iphone 4s and a camera that’s about 3 years old, both work fine and I’m reluctant to buy a new camera in case I lose it or it breaks.

The only trip I took a sleeping bag with me for was a summer I spent touring the US, because I knew I would be camping for a few days. However in retrospect I think it would have been easier to buy one out there or even hire one and use a sleeping bag liner rather than lug it around America! Are you planning on camping out there?
My camera wasn’t great on my RTW trip, pretty bog standard. But all of my photos on here of Australia and Southeast Asia are using it and I don’t think they’re too shabby? A friend of mine used her iPhone and her photos are pretty decent as well. As long as you’re happy with the photo quality of your existing camera I don’t think there’s any need to buy another one. Especially when that money could be a couple of week’s accommodation in Thailand!

Not really, I’m planning on getting a campervan around NZ, hostels in Oz and SE Asia, only camping I think I’ll do is out in Ayers Rock. I’ve read a lot of hostels don’t let you use your sleeping bag anyway. I’ve got a decent one that can be compressed from when I did DoE camping years ago which is still in nearly new condition, but it’ll take up valuable room. I’m thinking of just taking a sleeping bag liner/sheet instead and hiring bedding as needed (would rather have the shoes and bikinis!)
I hardly use my camera even on the holidays I’ve taken over the last few years, but it’s a decent compact one so I’m thinking I’ll be ok. It’s difficult when there is so much advice, but ideally I’d like to not go overboard on the buying things pre-travel and as I’ll mainly be going alone I don’t want to be too flashy with tech.
As it gets nearer the time I’m sure I’ll have more questions 🙂
If I find anything cool worth mentioning I’ll let you know – actually did buy the new Gillette travel razor and case yesterday in Boots which I though was good!

Yes always more room for shoes and bikinis! And you’re right hostels are weird about bringing sleeping bags in. I’m a sucker for pre-travel purchases, I just get too excited! But you’re right you have to try to not get carried away… Oh cool thanks I’ll check it out!!

Hiya, I’ve tried the FairFX prepaid card in the past which is quite good but I usually use my Halifax Credit Card which works out the best exchange rate. I then use the FairFX as a backup option. Ooh excited to read about your experiences! X

It totally depends on what you’re after. If you’re just looking for cheap flights, Skyscanner is such a good tool. You can search by month and see which days are the cheapest to fly. RTW Experts are also a good alternative to STA if you’re looking to book lots of stops.
If you’re looking for tour operators, I did my first week in Thailand with ThaIntro then travelled independently with the new friends I made on tour! (There’s a review of ThaIntro under the Thailand section on the blog!)

Awesome!! Ah don’t be nervous, it’ll be immense! Glad you’re doing Thaintro, it’s fab. In terms of jobs, definitely speak to your GP as this kind of thing is changing all the time. From memory the only one I didn’t get was the Rabies jab – backpackers tend to be 50/50 on it so worth looking into.
Islands-wise it depends what you’re after. You kind of have to experience Koh Phangan, it’s where Full Moon is and is a bit Lads On Tour, but it’s an experience! And Ko Tao is soooo chilled and lush! And the place for scuba diving. For the west islands, I loved Koh Phi-Phi and that’s where The Beach was filmed (Maya Bay).
