Food Diaries: Where To Eat In Barcelona

by

I’ve decided to start a new feature, documenting the awesome restaurants and cafes I’ve discovered in each fabulous destination. Food Diaries.

Because as you know I’m a MASSIVE foodie. And sometimes I don’t want to dedicate a whole blog post to one restaurant but I still think people should know about it, you know?

So here’s my first crack at it, focusing on my most recent adventure, Barcelona.

Park Guell, Barcelona

Food Diaries: Barcelona

Whilst I was in Barcelona, I decided that as I was walking around the city, I would make pitstops to eat tapas dishes. A few bites of something here, a few bites of something there, so I could eat lots of different things throughout the day. Pretty much the whole point of tapas, right? Here’s how I got on…

Tapas: Friss Cafe

My first stop was Friss Cafe for a spanish omelette. I bloody love spanish omelettes so I made sure it was the first thing I ate in Barcelona. And this bad boy was delicious. It’s right next to the Sagrada Familis so I had expected it to be tourist crap, but it was so nice!

Tapas: Unknown

My next tapas stop was nearby on Av. De Gaudi but I can’t find the name of it anywhere and it’s really bugging me. But it’s near Copa Cafe with a glass door if that helps… I thought I’d include it anyhow.

I stopped for my favourite kind of tapas – patatas bravas! And although delicious it was really different to the patatas bravas I have at home. It was more like wedges and as well as the usual tomato sauce they also serve it with a garlic mayo that is TO DIE. I usually don’t even like mayo.

Tapas: Can Paixano

I went to this place on a recommendation from a friend for an authentic Barcelona experience. And it was definitely that! Can Paixano is down by the harbour and didn’t have any other tourists in there but was PACKED with locals. Like really packed. Where everyone is standing up waiting to be served at a bar for tapas and pink cava.

Oh and the Cava is delicious and only 1.25 Euros a glass by the way.

I also tried a plate of various meats on sticks (like chorizo and sausages) and a plate of mixed olives and gherkins on sticks. Delicious and crazy cheap. It’s packed for a reason, you guys. And worth standing up for.

Tapas: Casa Gracia

You may remember Casa Gracia from my hostel review where I raved about the breakfast. Well I also tried out their restaurant for a few tapas dishes and it was just as amazing. The sweet potato with sour cream was so good and just what I wanted as a midnight snack!

Restaurant: Margherita

So for my birthday, despite being in Spain, I really fancied Italian. I know, go figure. But the birthday girl gets what she wants and we went to an Italian called Margherita. We picked this place purely because it was near our hostel and was open (it was a Sunday which sucks for things being open in Barcelona apparently), but were pleasantly surprised with how good it was.

I had a ravioli dish with mushrooms and black truffle and holy shit it was amazing. I’d definitely recommend it if that sounds like your kind of thing. Josh had a seafood linguine and was equally as enthusiastic about it.

Restaurant: Cafe Camelia

I’m really big on veggie food – I’m not actually vegetarian I just really like it. So when we passed a vegetarian cafe called Cafe Camelia in the Gracia neighbourhood, I was keen to give it a go. And it was so me. All vegetarian and vegan dishes, lots of herbal teas and smoothies, loads of cakes and pretty tablecloths. YES.

I had a polenta dish with ratatouille and cheese and loved every bite. Josh had a big ol’ plate of crudite and bread and houmous, it was very nice indeed. Carnivores be like WTF but I had a great time, K?

Restaurant: Chivuo’s Slow Street Food

Oh here’s one for the meat-eaters. Another restaurant we discovered in Gracia was Chivuo’s Slow Street Food! A place all about street food and craft beers, the best things right?

I had a Phillie Cheese Steak and I tried Josh’s Pulled Pork Bap, both were AMAZING. And they cost under 10 Euros each with fries. Bargain, right? Def check it out if you’re in the area.

Restaurant: Ultramarinos

Finally, we were total tourists one night and ate at one of the al fresco restaurants on Las Ramblas – Ultramarinos. I normally avoid places that are super touristy but I was so bloody hungry I went to the first restaurant I saw. And it was actually pretty good. I don’t eat seafood but Josh rated the Paella. I rated the sangria…

There you have it, the places I ate at in Barcelona. Anywhere you’d recommend?
