The Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk, Sydney

by

Despite living in Sydney for a while a few years back, there were still a LOT of things I hadn’t done. And I was keen to do them all on my return at the beginning of the month. But there was one thing I had done a few times and still wanted to revisit – the Eastern Suburbs Coastal Walk from Coogee to Bondi.

The 6km walk along the coast doesn’t sound like much but it is one of the most underrated sights in Sydney IMO. It’s a bloody beautiful route with gorgeous beaches and crazy pretty cliffs and coves.

A couple of times in the past I’ve run it as it has lots of outside gyms along the way and varying slopes and steps. It’s actually a real good workout. But this time I took my sweet ass time and walked it with Josh.

I started at Coogee, after a seriously delicious lunch at Beach Burritos Co, and started along the first leg with already spectacular views from the cliffs. But a short while later we arrived at the first of many beaches along the walk – Gordon’s Bay.

This little cove is such a hidden gem and one of my favourite beaches in Sydney with it’s large rocks perfect for sunbathing on. There were also lots of adorable dogs playing here so I was basically in heaven.

Further on, we came to the next beach, Clovelly Bay. This one is quite popular for spotting fishes and a lot of people were snorkelling when we passed. We decided not to stop at this one and kept on going along the coastal walk.

Although the next leg was a bit more gruelling than we had thought and I admit we did have a little sit down under the tree. I know, it’s like we’re 80. But it was REALLY hot in my defence. Luckily there’s lots of water fountains along the route, buddy.

Anyway, you pass some nice expensive houses overlooking the sea and some cool cliffs, so there’s lots to see. But there was a bit of erosion along this part of the walk and we had to take the signposted detour around a cemetery but it joins right back onto the walk in 5-10 minutes time.

The next beach was Bronte – beautiful with a large lawn area, cafes and a man-made rock pool for swimming. This is a nice spot to spend some time if you’ve got the whole day and is a really popular one.

Next up, just around the corner is Tamarama Beach. I like this one too, it’s a quiet beach that’s just really pretty. But they’re all really pretty, they all have beautiful oceans and soft white sands. It’s easy to take them for granted at this point. But you can’t deny Tamarama is a beaut.

The next leg is another gorgeous bit of scenery with jagged cliff tops and rocky coves, plus a nice little look-out point overlooking the end of the walk – Bondi Beach.

Bondi itself is famous for a reason as one of the bigger and prettier beaches. It’s popular with surfers because of the constant waves and there’s the Iceberg swimming pool overlooking the beach. Throw in the loads of shops and restaurants along the beach and the many activities on offer and you get why it’s such a dream.

This is also why I like doing the walk from Coogee to Bondi rather than the other way around. You get the big reveal of Bondi’s beautiful coastline.

Plus it meant I could finish off the Eastern Suburbs Coastal Walk with a few beers at the Bavarian Beer Cafe in Bondi. Always a winner.

Although it’s worth pointing out that if you do the walk the other way round you can keep going past Coogee to Maroubra Beach which is another beautiful surf beach that’s really quiet if you want to avoid the crowds.

Do you have any walks you would recommend?
