A Travel Blogger’s Tech Kit List

by

I bloody love a gadget. Fact. So when I’m off on my travels I like to be equipped with my fave technology to make sure I make the most of my trip, get fabulous photos and videos, and stay connected with the travel blogging world. So here’s a list of exactly what tech I have!

Travel Tech <3

A great quality DSLR camera.

I’m new to the DSLR world. My boyf bought me a Nikon D3300 for Christmas this year and it’s completely transformed both the quality of photos on the blog as well as how into photography I now am. It’s a lot more fun to see what kind of shots you can get when you’re working with a fancy bit of tech. The Nikon D3300 produces great quality photos that I love putting up on here, but I admit I’m still stuck on the ‘Automatic’ setting. My name’s Kara and I’m a photography newb. Work in progress, okay?

A GoPro for capturing the adventures.

I’m also new to GoPro. I recently purchased the GoPro HERO 4 Session and so far LOVE it. I took it to Iceland recently (video coming soon!) and it was really easy to use, totally waterproof, small and light so I could carry it around in my pocket and generally just a lot of fun! I’m not an extreme-sports kind of gal, which is mainly what action cams are for, but GoPro sure do make travel videos a lot easier IMO. I’m officially obsessed.

All the GoPro accessories a girl could need.

I said I was obsessed right? Cue buying every accessory available on Amazon. Now, hands up, they’re not legit GoPro. Because mate, I just spent £160 on a camera I’m not splashing out on the accessories, you get me? So I went for a combined package of accessories suitable for the GoPro Hero 4 Session amongst others, from a brand called Zookki. It took me a while to figure out how it all worked and fitted together but it did the trick and I saved myself a few pennies! I also bought a separate ‘floaty‘ which is the yellow thing that keeps your GoPro floating if you drop it in water. Because if it sank to the bottom of the ocean I’d be pissed.

A cliche macbook.

Ugh I’m such a cliche blogger. Gotta have an Apple MacBook Pro, right? I semi hate myself for getting a Mac and feeding the all-powerful Apple machine, but once you have iPhoto and iMovie, you just can’t go back. But you know, the war between PC and Mac is a big one and hats off to my blogger brethren backing the PC side. Gotta do what you gotta do.

A smartphone for staying connected.

Again I’m on that Apple train with my iPhone. But in this case any smart phone will do. The main thing is that a travel blogger gal like myself needs all of the apps and social media channels at her fingertips. I’m obviously all over Instagram and Twitter and that, but I also use my iPhone to control my GoPro in the GoPro app, edit photos in VSCO, book last minute flights on SkyScanner and manage my trip itineraries in TripIt. You officially know all of my secrets.

A portable phone charger.

The struggle is real when you’re a travel blogger. Your phone’s battery dying feels like a lot more of a bigger deal. Like, how am I going to tweet about this? If I can’t Instagram it, it’s like it didn’t even happen… Haha ok I’m kidding, I can survive without my phone and in fact I actually quite like it every now and then. But it is a bitch when you’re somewhere fabulous and your phone gives up. It’s nice to be able to send your boyfriend a photo of where you are and make him jealous. You know, that kind of totally normal thing in every functioning relationship. So a portable phone charger is in my essential tech kit list for sure.

A Fuji Instax Mini just for fun.

Ok so I’ve got a DSLR camera and a GoPro in my arsenal, surely that’s it on the camera front? Nah I throw in a Fujifilm Instax Mini 70 just for fun. I mean it’s not going to get better quality shots than my Nikon and it isn’t quick and easy like taking a photo on my iPhone, but it’s just a lot of fun! I don’t take many shots on my Instax, because lets face it the film ain’t cheap, but the odd one of something special is nice. Because I’m stingey with shots, I only take photos of the best things and end up with a collection of lovely instant photos that look fab in a frame. Or, you know, I’m just a sucker for anything nostalgic.

  1. Hi!

I love you’re blog! It’s really helping me out for planning my travels 🙂

I have all of these accessories apart from the DSLR, I have a small canon compact camera instead. I was wondering what your advice is for packing all your tech? I don’t want to put it in my backpack especially my MacBook! But then how else to carry it? In a separate carry on day time bag?

    Thanks!!

    1. Thanks Leanne! 🙂

I carry it all in my “daypack” so the bag I take with me on the plane as my carry-on. I definitely don’t trust any valuables in my backpack. Once you’re there you can lock it all away in a hostel locker so you don’t have to lug it around everywhere! x
